Pre-Medical Program Information
Although not required, the majority of entrants into medical school have a Biology degree and show evidence of excellent academic performance, as well as dedication to the profession. The importance of an excellent GPA and MCAT score cannot be overemphasized. It is also essential that potential medical school applicants accumulate significant health-related experiences through internships and volunteer work prior to applying. Students interested in pursuing a career in medicine should contact the SPSU pre-professional advisor as soon as possible. What does a Physician do? Click on the U.S. Department of Labor description for Physicians & Surgeons. Prerequisite Coursework for Medical School Admission:
Biochemistry w/lab (BIOL 3111K) is strongly recommended as some medical schools require this course. SPSU recommends Anatomy & Physiology I and II (BIOL 4400K & 4460K) and Cell Physiology (BIOL 3400K) as additional preparation for the MCAT. It is also recommended that all required coursework be completed (or in progress) by the Spring Semester of the Junior year to adequately prepare a student for the MCAT (see timeline below).
